Reflection:
Questions are the source of energy that is necessary to feed the happiness engine. I think we all know this, but we also all know how hard it can be to generate questions as we age. As a kid, asking questions is like breathing oxygen, it is necessary and effortless. As an adult, asking questions is like going shopping at the mall, we only do it when it is absolutely necessary.
If you are searching for a source of unending questions, follow Jim Rohn’s advice and look to your frustrations in life and do your best to turn them into what he calls “fascinations”. There is no better source of question generating material then the things that set our emotions on fire and force our elephants into action. The things that get our blood pumping, adrenaline flowing, or anger rising.
Frustrations happen all day, every day if you are keeping your mind open and observing the world around you and how you feel?
In this exact moment, here are some of the things that are frustrating me in my life.
Little Things - Why do I always get so frustrated when my wife leaves her stuff lying around the house all the time? Why do I always feel so tired in the mornings? Why can’t I think of something meaningful to write as a lesson to the last book I read? Why does my dog constantly interrupt me all day whenever I’m trying to find some quiet time to write? Why am I struggling so much with my monthly challenge this month? Why did my last tennis match go so much better than my previous one?
Big Things – What do I truly value in this world? What is my Purpose? How do I find a way to live my life with my daughter each day even though she isn’t physically here? How in the hell do I transition out of my job so I can backfill that time with more meaningful work and further fulfill my purpose in this world? How do we create this ecosystem of helping others to do the same? How do I do all of this while still keeping the lights on and not asking my family to sacrifice their value, needs, or lifestyles?
LOOK AT ALL THOSE QUESTIONS!!!!
Those questions are gorgeous, and it took me 5 minutes to rattle off on the top of my head after thinking about the things that frustrate me the most right now in my life.
You think you have nothing to talk to God about today…think again!
If you picked any of those questions, took them to God, and talked it out; I’m sure he will have 10 more questions to get you thinking further. You 2 could talk for an hour on each of the little topics or for the next month on the bigger ones. Each one of those questions is an opportunity to unpack your emotions, dig deeper into understanding why you even care about it in the first place, go explore new areas to learn and grow, set a course of action to train your elephant to march in the new direction, and then come back to talk to God to share the results and discuss the new questions that arose.
Each one of those questions are tiny rocks that needs to be moved in order to slowly create your beautiful garden over time.
Turn those frustrations into questions and see what you and God can turn them into by working together!
Question: What questions come to mind when you think of what is frustrating you right now?
