Book 245 - A Year of Magical Learning (Part 2/2)

Reflection Title: I Want to be World Class at Being Me!

Book – The Dip: The Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit and When to Stick by Seth Godin (Part 2 of 2)

Book Description:

According to bestselling author Seth Godin, what really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.

Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt-until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons. In fact, winners seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it. If you can become number one in your niche, you'll get more than your fair share of profits, glory, and long-term security. Losers, on the other hand, fall into two basic traps. Either they fail to stick out the Dip-they get to the moment of truth and then give up-or they never even find the right Dip to conquer.

Whether you're a graphic designer, a sales rep, an athlete, or an aspiring CEO, this fun little book will help you figure out if you're in a Dip that's worthy of your time, effort, and talents. If you are, The Dip will inspire you to hang tough. If not, it will help you find the courage to quit-so you can be number one at something else.

Reflection:

Now that this book has helped reveal to me that I am indeed stuck in a Cul-de-sac currently in my professional career that I’ve decided isn’t worth pushing through the dip, the important question now becomes…what do I want to be strive to be world class at in my life?

I thought long and hard about this one after I came to the decision to quit! I was out a run with Emilia, listening to this book, and my mind was racing. I was asking myself this exact question and I kept coming back to the same idea over and over again in my mind…I WANT TO BE WORLD CLASS AT BEING CHRIS SEARS!

What does that even mean?

Being world class at being me means putting first things first each and every day I’m blessed to be on this Earth. I want to strive to do as many activities as I can that directly correlate to the values, mission, and purpose I hold so near and dear to my heart. Specifically, for me, that means trying to live a balanced existence filled with meaningful work with meaningful relationships and helping others to find and do the same in their own life.

This is the big challenge and lifelong mission of my existence that I’m not afraid to say out loud and dedicate my time on this Earth toward. Sorry software sales, but that just isn’t challenging enough which is why I’m quitting in the middle of my current dip. It just isn’t worth my time.

After all, Seth Godin makes a brilliant point by saying, “The point of the dip is the solve the biggest problems. If you don’t want to solve the biggest problems, what are you doing?”

I couldn’t agree more.

When I heard this statement, I immediately said to myself, “What the hell am I doing? My current job doesn’t align at all to the big problems I want to solve! I spend my mornings and evenings every night doing meaningful work with meaningful relationships, in between the 2 I’m wasting my time…why?”

I have a fire inside of me that wants to be world class at being me, living a balanced existence filled with meaningful work and meaningful relationships, and helping others to do the same. Emilia lit that fire by showing me how incredible living a life filled with values and purpose could look, even if it was only 39 days long. I figured that I have a lifetime left to pick up the torch and do what she showed me; I’ll be damned if I’m going to be denied or disappoint her.

We’re here to solve big problems, fulfill our purpose, and leave something behind for others to pick up the cause when we’re gone. Bring it on!

Question: What big problems do you strive to be world class at in this life?
