Reflection Title: A Better Me + Better You = Better Us!
Book – An Everyone Culture: Becoming a Deliberately Developmental Organization by Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow Lahey (Part 4 of 4)
Book Description:
Deliberately Developmental Organizations. A DDO is organized around the simple but radical conviction that organizations will best prosper when they are more deeply aligned with people’s strongest motive, which is to grow. This means going beyond consigning “people development” to high-potential programs, executive coaching, or once-a-year off-sites. It means fashioning an organizational culture in which support of people’s development is woven into the daily fabric of working life and the company’s regular operations, daily routines, and conversations.
An Everyone Culture dives deep into the worlds of three leading companies that embody this breakthrough approach. It reveals the design principles, concrete practices, and underlying science at the heart of DDOs—from their disciplined approach to giving feedback, to how they use meetings, to the distinctive way that managers and leaders define their roles. The authors then show readers how to build this developmental culture in their own organizations. This book demonstrates a whole new way of being at work. It suggests that the culture you create is your strategy—and that the key to success is developing everyone.
Reflection:
You can’t get to the point of becoming a deliberately developmental organization unless the people that make up that community aren’t first willing to become a deliberately developmental individual.
It ALWAYS begins and ends with you!
No community, influencer, or even the almighty God himself can force you to want this for your life if you don’t. Becoming a deliberately developmental individual is a choice. You must want to choose this life for yourself, believe it is possible, and commit if you hope to have any impact on your life.
If you are willing to put in the time to work harder on yourself than you do on anything else in this world, you will see the growth you seek…I guarantee it!
To become a deliberately developmental individual, one must be willing to commit to a lifetime of daily focus around living your personal values, having a growth mindset, becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable, and enduring through it all.
Deliberately is the key word to focus on here. You will have to make it happen for yourself. No one is going to do this for you, no one will give you the blueprint of how to do it, or even provide criteria on what success looks like. You must figure it out for yourself. Luckily, that is where your values become so critical toward how you make this happen. Your values are your compass for your journey as you embark on becoming a DDI. Your values will serve as your best friend on this journey and illuminate your path forward and revealing the next step as you walk through the wilderness of life. Don’t ever leave home without them.
Once you’ve started to figure this life as a DDI, you will slowly start to realize that it is the most fun and rewarding experience you will ever had the privilege to take part in this world. Every day is new, fun, fulfilling, and meaningful. I don’t want to call it happiness, but you can if you want. I just call it purpose.
Here’s the wild thing about being a DDI, while living that life every day for yourself, you somehow end up stumbling upon other DDI’s that are on a similar path. Let’s call this phenomenon the Compound Effect, Karma, serendipity, fate, or whatever else you choose. However, you want to label it, it happens and that is all that really matters.
When one DDI that is committed to a life of growth meets another DDI that is aligned to the same objective, that is when the real magic begins.
That is when the magical formula that Next Jump lives by begins to take shape and you see a community forming.
That formula is A Better Me + Better You = Better Us!
The better us is when the real magic begins and instead of just transforming your personal life, you will have the opportunity to transform the world.
Question: Are you committed to being a DDI?
