Book 54 - A Year of Magical Learning

Updated: Aug 5, 2022

Reflection Title - Be a Gardener, Not a Moses. Set the Stage for Others to Thrive

Book: Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries by Safi Bachall

Book Description: Loonshots reveals a surprising new way of thinking about the mysteries of group behavior that challenges everything we thought we knew about nurturing radical breakthroughs. Bachall, a physicist and entrepreneur, shows why teams, companies, or any group with a mission will suddenly change from embracing new ideas to rejecting them, just as flowing water will suddenly change into brittle ice. Mountains of print have been written about culture. Loonshots identifies the small shifts in structure that control this transition, the same way that temperature controls the change from water to ice.

Reflection:

Create the environment / ecosystem to foster and encourage people to find and live their purpose, whatever that may be. That is my life's mission.

In order to do that, you have to be a Gardener and not a Moses, as the author says in the book.

Being a gardener means creating the conditions and structure needed for plants to grow and thrive. Being a Moses means being the hero that leads a group of people to the promised land. I don't want to be the hero with all the answers. I want to be the designer that helps all the Moses' out there in this world to find, live, and fulfill their life of purpose. In doing this, I'll be fulfilling my own.

There is no greater thrill for me than to help others toward whatever path they seek and watch their success and growth. We all deserve a chance at real happiness in this life and I want to do everything I can to make that happen for as many people as I can in this world. In a lot of ways, that was the genesis of the idea of ClubAny between Trieu and I. We don't want to tell anyone what to do or how to live their lives. All we really want is to help people discover themselves and then provide the ecosystem so that they can live that newly discovered life on purpose.

Trieu and I were already deep down this path of the idea of ClubAny when we came across Loonshots. After I finished it, I immediately texted him and said, "YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK". It was damn near a blueprint of exactly what we were trying to create already. Trieu read it as well and thought the exact same thing. The key lesson I learned is to always remember that we are Gardeners in this mission of ours!

Our goal is to create the stage for others to shine and thrive. Nothing more and nothing less.

Question: Do you want to be a gardener, a Moses, or something else in your own life?
